The cruel industry of Greyhound racing
In the lives of racing greyhounds, they suffer confinement and are subject to the cruel standard practices of the industry. They suffer horrendous injuries on the track and often even death. Greyhounds used for racing can be kept in cages, barely large enough for them to stand up or turn around, for up to 23 hours per day.
An inquiry has been heard that in Australia 17,000 healthy greyhounds are killed each year by the racing industry. This is because of overbreeding puppies then disposing of unwanted young dogs as "wastage," because they can’t run fast enough or won’t run at all. Most often the reward for reduced winnings of older dogs is death.
