Leave the Reef alone

July 2021

Re the article "Great Barrier Relief," Federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley has managed to hoodwink 12 of 21 World Heritage Committee members into believing the Reef is ok. The Australian Government 'supposedly' has undertaken steps to protect the reef, while on the other hand, actively supporting coal, gas and oil mining, all a huge contribution to climate change. Not to mention the cattle industry runoff into the ocean along with increased shipping disturbances by allowing the Adani mine to go ahead. The continuing temperature increase and weather extremes are reducing the potential recovery time required for the reef to repair itself. All coral reefs around the world are in extreme danger as is the human population. Environmentalists' voices appear to be ignored compared to profiteering industrialists with a compliant Neoliberalism minded Government. Good economy, dead planet!

Cattle collars story admits run-off damages Reef

May 2018

WHAT an interesting article “World first for cattle collars” about Ian Reilly’s invention to keep cattle confined to where farmers want them to be, by using electronic collars.

This is the first time I have read an article that actually admits the runoff of nutrients from massive cattle production in Queensland is contributing to the destruction of the Great Barrier Reef, one of the world’s great wonders.

Many farmers say the reef 2050 target to reduce the run-off by 80 per cent by 2025 is not economically viable and without acting now our reef will continue to degrade.
