Archaic fireworks
June 2023
I am extremely disappointed to learn that yet another fundraising fireworks display is scheduled to take place on the Mylor Oval, on June 24, which will disrupt the peaceful environment again. The explosions and unexpected dazzling light flashes cause havoc as native animals run into fences and roads, and birds fly from trees in the dark. The environmental pollution alone is a great cause for concern. This archaic form of entertainment has long passed its use by date.

The question is what are the effects on native and domestic animals of fireworks displays in close proximity?
Fireworks displays can have various effects on both native and domestic animals when they are in close proximity (i.e., visual & hearing distance) to the fireworks. Here are some of the potential impacts:
Stress and Anxiety: The loud and sudden noises from fireworks can startle animals, causing them to feel anxious and stressed. This is particularly true for animals with sensitive hearing, such as dogs, cats, and wildlife.
Fear and Panic: The loud explosions can trigger fear and panic in animals, leading them to try to escape or hide. Domestic animals may attempt to run away from home, risking injury or becoming lost.
Injuries: Animals can accidentally injure themselves while trying to flee from the noise or by getting entangled in objects in their environment during moments of panic.
Respiratory Issues: The smoke and chemical pollutants released during fireworks displays can exacerbate respiratory issues in animals with pre-existing conditions, especially those with respiratory sensitivities.
Wildlife Disruption: Fireworks can disrupt the behaviour of native wildlife. Nocturnal animals may be confused and disoriented by the sudden bright lights, and nesting birds might abandon their nests.
Domestic Livestock Disturbance: Livestock animals, such as horses, may also be frightened by fireworks, leading to injuries, damage to property, or escapes from enclosures.
Digestive Problems: Some animals may ingest firework debris, thinking it is food, which can cause digestive issues and potentially lead to poisoning.
Impact on Nesting and Reproduction: Fireworks near nesting areas can disturb the breeding and nesting behaviours of birds and other wildlife, potentially leading to reduced reproductive success.
Long-term Behavioral Changes: Repeated exposure to fireworks may cause long-term behavioural changes in some animals, making them more sensitive and reactive to loud noises even after the fireworks have ended.
To mitigate these effects, some communities and event organizers are taking measures such as offering designated quiet zones, promoting responsible use of fireworks, and considering alternatives to traditional fireworks that produce less noise and pollution. Additionally, pet owners can take precautions such as keeping their animals indoors, creating a safe and comfortable space for them, and providing distractions to help reduce stress during fireworks displays.
What are the benefits of laser light displays as opposed to fireworks at scale?
Laser light displays offer several benefits compared to traditional fireworks, especially when considering large-scale events. Here are some advantages of laser light displays:
Safety: Fireworks can be hazardous, and accidents can occur during their setup, ignition, or after effects. Laser light displays, on the other hand, are non-explosive and don't involve any burning materials, reducing the risk of injuries or fires.
Environmental impact: Fireworks produce significant amounts of smoke, particulate matter, and harmful chemicals, which can contribute to air and water pollution. Laser light displays, in contrast, are environmentally friendly and do not generate any harmful emissions.
Precision and control: With lasers, you can achieve much higher precision in the patterns and shapes created in the sky. The light beams can be controlled with great accuracy, allowing for intricate and stunning visual effects that are difficult to replicate with fireworks.
Reusability: Fireworks are generally single-use items, leading to waste and environmental concerns. Laser equipment can be reused multiple times, making them a more sustainable option in the long run.
Flexibility: Laser light displays can be easily synchronized with music or other visual effects, creating a more immersive and dynamic experience for the audience. The versatility of lasers allows for a wide range of creative possibilities.
Weather resistance: Fireworks displays are heavily affected by weather conditions, such as wind and rain, which can pose safety risks and lead to cancellations. Laser light displays are less affected by weather, making them a more reliable choice for outdoor events.
Noise reduction: Fireworks can be very loud, which can be distressing for people with noise sensitivity or animals. Laser light displays are generally quiet, allowing for a more enjoyable experience for all attendees.
Cost-effectiveness: While the initial setup for a laser light display may require an investment in equipment, over time, they can be more cost-effective than fireworks, which need to be repurchased for each event.
Accessibility: Some areas have restrictions or bans on fireworks due to safety and environmental concerns. Laser light displays provide an alternative that can be used in places where fireworks are not permitted.
Cultural and religious considerations: In some cultures or religious events, fireworks might be seen as inappropriate or disruptive. Laser light displays can be a respectful alternative while still providing a visually impressive experience.
The choice between laser light displays and fireworks should depend on the event's safety considerations, and most importantly, the environmental impact.
